Many of us didn’t have parents/caregivers who comforted us when we needed them to and so our younger self didn’t learn to be kind towards ourself.
One of the ways many of us coped with dysregulation as children was by numbing ourselves from our feelings. It was just too much for our tender nervous system to handle. So, we simply stopped feeling our feelings relying on our cognition for guidance. We learned to think and act in ways that were acceptable.
While this kept us safe, it split us from our heart and emotions. Finding the way back to them is beginning of healing.
In this video I explain the science behind this phrase based on the Polyvagal theory that was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges.
When we can feel our emotions and the resonance they have in our body as physical sensations, we have access to all of ourself - our thoughts, emotions, and body sensations, as ways of gaining information from outside of us. The greater this mind-body connection, the more access we have to our innate wisdom, intuition, creativity, as well as what brings us pleasure, what we are passionate about, and how that might be guiding us to our purpose. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have all of this available to us so that we can experience life more fully?
